Build a balanced equation without changing species

Construct coefficient constraints and audit an independently proposed oxygen amount .

Learning outcome: Hold fuel2 and compare oxygen proposals4,6,8. Retain element totals and residuals, then rescale the valid coefficient family to its lowest whole-number ratio .

Starting recap

Review amount dimensions, chemical formulas and charge, signed differences, ratio bounds and the distinction between a theoretical constraint and measured conversion.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

For fuel coefficient 2, carbon and hydrogen require4 CO2 and 6 H2O; oxygen then requires 6 O2.

Predict

Can a wrong oxygen balance be repaired by changing a subscript while keeping the same reaction?

Construct an atom-conserving coefficient family

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Fixed species C2H6O + O2 → CO2 + H2O. Carbon and hydrogen determine product coefficients; independently test the proposed oxygen coefficient. This is an atom ledger, not a combustion experiment, mechanism, rate or equilibrium prediction.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Proposed: 1 C₂H₆O + 3 O₂ → 2 CO₂ + 3 H₂O

Carbon and hydrogen determine the product coefficients; the oxygen residual below independently tests this proposal.

Changing coefficients preserves species identity; changing subscripts would change the reaction.

The minimal whole-number ratio is1:3:2:3. Multiplying all coefficients preserves the balance, while a residual diagnoses an invalid proposal. Balanced atoms are necessary, not evidence that a process is fast, favorable or experimentally complete.

Retain the reaction/measurement boundary with every number. This mathematical packet is not a chemical procedure or evidence of actual laboratory technique.

Understand

Keep identities fixed

A chemical formula specifies a species; a coefficient specifies how many formula units participate in the symbolic account. Changing H2O into H2O2 is not balancing the same reaction. Begin with a declared set of reactants and products, then adjust coefficients so each element has the same total on both sides.

Derive a coefficient family

For a C2H6O units, carbon conservation requires 2a CO2 and hydrogen conservation requires 3a H2O. The product oxygen count is 4a+3a=7a. Fuel already supplies a oxygen atoms, leaving6a that must come from O2. Therefore the O2 coefficient is 3a. The smallest positive whole-number ratio is 1:3:2:3.

Test a proposal independently

Set a=2 but propose only 4 O2. The left side contains 2+8=10 O atoms, while products contain14. The residual left minus right is −4, so the proposed equation is not atom-conserving. Six O2 removes the residual; eight gives a positive residual. A zero residual is an exact statement about this symbolic ledger, not a measured yield.

Translate coefficients carefully

The same ratio applies to molecule counts and to molar amounts because one mole contains the same number of specified entities. It does not generally give a mass ratio: two moles of different species can have different masses. A fractional coefficient may be useful in a reaction definition, while a minimum whole-number set is a conventional way to present this molecular equation.

Transfer and boundary

Multiplying the valid ratio by three gives 3:9:6:9, not a different chemistry. A balanced equation does not establish that all fuel actually forms those products, how quickly conversion occurs, whether other products appear or whether conditions favor completion. This activity is an original conservation exercise only; it requests no combustion, ignition, heating or handling of fuel.

Sources and evidence boundary

Conceptual sources checked 30 October 2026: Balancing chemical equations. All prose, cases, code and diagrams are original. The supplied models are not measured structures, a performed laboratory investigation or certification of independent mastery. No chemical handling, heating, pressure vessel or cryogenic experiment is requested. Retain predictions, contrasting evidence and a changed-case explanation.

Apply

For C2H6O coefficient 2, what O2 coefficient balances complete conversion to CO2 and H2O?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

What does atom conservation fail to establish about mechanism, rate or actual conversion?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
