Challenge a calorimetric inference with a missing heat path

Include cup, solution and external transfer before interpreting a precise temperature rise.

Learning outcome: Compare external losses0 and50 at cup20, then vary cup capacity at fixed loss. Retain the reaction sign and bounded interval, not only the solution heat.

Starting recap

Review signed energy transfers, dimensional consistency, reaction coefficients, state functions and phase/structural evidence boundaries.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

For cup20 J/K, solution400 J/K, rise2 K and external loss50 J, reaction heat is−890 J; at extent.0100 mol, inferred enthalpy is−89.0 kJ/mol.

Predict

Can a very narrow temperature reading establish that no heat escaped beyond the cup and solution?

Infer reaction heat with a cup and an omitted-path challenge

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original reaction packet: solution mass100 g, specific heat4.00 J/(g K), rise2.00±0.05 K, reaction extent.0100 mol. Cup and solution share the rise; external loss is selected exactly. Constant-pressure only-PV-work condition permits reaction enthalpy inference. Other calibration/chemical errors omitted.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Calculated evidence under the stated assumptions
QuantityValueUnit
Solution heat gain800J
Cup heat gain40J
External heat gain50J
Reaction heat-890J
Reaction molar enthalpy-89kJ/mol reaction
Bounded molar enthalpy minimum-91.1kJ/mol reaction
Bounded molar enthalpy maximum-86.9kJ/mol reaction
Naive solution-only molar inference-80kJ/mol reaction

The reaction loss must include every declared receiving part, not only the solution.

The selected external loss is a competing boundary hypothesis, not a measured value established by the same temperature rise. A narrow temperature interval cannot validate omitted heat paths or reaction extent. Here constant-pressure/only-PV-work assumptions are explicitly stipulated before equating molar heat with reaction enthalpy.

Retain the system, phase and structural assumptions with every number. Supplied or calculated evidence is not actual calorimetry, chemical handling or X-ray operation.

Understand

Define the reacting subsystem

An exothermic reaction can warm a surrounding solution and the calorimeter cup while also transferring heat farther outward. Inferring reaction heat requires including all declared receivers. A temperature rise of one part is evidence about that part, not proof that every other transfer vanished.

Work the original packet

The solution mass is100 g and its stipulated specific heat4.00 J/(g K), so its heat capacity is400 J/K. A20 J/K cup shares a2.00 K rise, receiving40 J while the solution receives800 J. With a further50 J transferred to external surroundings, the reaction heat is−890 J. At a reaction extent.0100 mol, this is−89.0 kJ per mole of the stated reaction.

Propagate only the declared reading bound

The temperature-rise interval is1.95–2.05 K. Treating capacities, external loss and extent as exact stipulations gives reaction molar enthalpy between−91.1 and−86.9 kJ/mol for the reference packet. More negative heat corresponds to the larger observed rise. These endpoints are bounded arithmetic, not a confidence interval or a complete uncertainty statement.

Challenge model completeness

Ignoring the cup and external path would give−80 kJ/mol from the solution alone. Improving the temperature resolution would not remove that boundary error. Likewise, a wrong reaction extent could alter the molar result without changing any displayed temperature. The selected external loss is a competing hypothesis, not independently measured merely because its control has a number.

Specify the enthalpy condition

The packet assumes constant pressure and only pressure-volume work before interpreting reaction heat as enthalpy change. An actual constant-volume calorimeter instead relates heat to internal-energy change under suitable conditions. A useful report states that distinction, retains the first boundary assumption and proposes an independent calibration or loss test. It does not claim that a physical calorimetric experiment or safe chemical reaction was performed.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
