SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Defend and revise a quantitative chemical explanation

Reconcile analytical amount, heat paths, reaction states and independent review in a course-wide evidence defense.

Learning outcome: Use cup capacities 20 and 40 J/K with the same 50 J external path; predict the molar enthalpy change. Then audit the independent titration/Hess packet in the body and retain a full first report, critique, revision and newly assigned transfer.

Starting recap

Reuse the course models explicitly; distinguish evidence independence, fitted constraints, withheld checks and a genuinely new assigned case.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

For 0.0100 mol reaction, solution plus cup gain 840 J and external surroundings gain 50 J: reaction enthalpy is −89.0 kJ/mol under stipulated constant-pressure only-PV-work conditions.

Predict

Can an apparently precise temperature rise repair an incorrect reaction extent or missing receiving part?

Infer reaction heat with a cup and an omitted-path challenge

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original reaction packet: solution mass100 g, specific heat4.00 J/(g K), rise2.00±0.05 K, reaction extent.0100 mol. Cup and solution share the rise; external loss is selected exactly. Constant-pressure only-PV-work condition permits reaction enthalpy inference. Other calibration/chemical errors omitted.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

The reaction loss must include every declared receiving part, not only the solution.

The selected external loss is a competing boundary hypothesis, not a measured value established by the same temperature rise. A narrow temperature interval cannot validate omitted heat paths or reaction extent. Here constant-pressure/only-PV-work assumptions are explicitly stipulated before equating molar heat with reaction enthalpy.

Retain the system, phase and structural assumptions with every number. Supplied or calculated evidence is not actual calorimetry, chemical handling or X-ray operation.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

State the claim and denominator

A molar reaction enthalpy is heat divided by a specified reaction extent under appropriate conditions, not heat divided by whichever amount is convenient. Identify the balanced equation, physical states, limiting amount and the system boundary. At constant pressure with only PV work, a reaction heat can represent enthalpy change. An arbitrary heat measurement does not automatically have that interpretation.

Reconcile the receiving parts

The workbench stipulates a 100 g solution with specific heat 4 J/(g K), a selected cup heat capacity and a 2.00 K rise. With cup capacity 20 J/K, solution and cup gain 840 J. If a separately stipulated 50 J reaches external surroundings, reaction heat is −890 J and extent .0100 mol gives −89.0 kJ/mol. Changing only the cup to 40 J/K gives −930 J and −93.0 kJ/mol. The selected external path is a hypothesis, not a loss measured by that same temperature reading.

Audit analytical amount independently

A new, separate acid packet has 20.00 mL of sample. A monobasic strong base at .1000 M gives a measured endpoint volume 30.20 mL before a .20 mL blank subtraction. If the acid requires two base equivalents per formula unit, corrected base amount is 3.000 mmol, acid amount 1.500 mmol and concentration .07500 M. If a later complete reaction uses all of that acid with a one-formula-unit extent convention, 150 J released corresponds to −100 kJ/mol acid. Dividing by base equivalents instead would give −50 kJ/mol of base equivalents, a different stated denominator—not the acid molar value.

Challenge energy paths and material assumptions

Suppose two same-condition isomer steps predict −30±2 kJ/mol in total while a direct packet is −25±1. Their feasible intervals do not overlap. Do not average away the disagreement; check identity, phases, calibration and omitted paths. Similarly, using liquid-water formation data for a gas-water product changes the reaction being evaluated. A unit-cell density inferred from one indexed diffraction peak is conditional on the index, occupancy, composition and conventional-cell count. A narrow reading bound does not validate any of those assumptions.

Build the full-course report

Link six evidence bundles: measurement and conservation; isotope/electronic interpretation; competing bonding models; geometry and interactions; reaction/solution/gas accounting; thermochemistry and material constraints. For each, retain a prediction, a contrasting setting or rejected hypothesis, a calculation with units and a limitation. Explain at least two links between bundles, such as how the amount denominator changes an enthalpy inference or how structure constrains a bulk-property explanation. A pile of screenshots without these connections is not a synthesis.

Review without erasing the record

Submit the first report before revealing or reading feedback. A reviewer records criterion-linked evidence and a next action; their name and role are self-reported, not verified by the app. Keep the revised report separate. For transfer, the reviewer assigns a new packet changing both numerical values and one model condition, with a withheld consistency check. Freeze that assignment and a plan before the response. Public worked examples or a repeated recipe cannot establish unfamiliar performance. Real supervised technique and learner validation remain separate gates.

Evidence and source boundary

The composition/volume and calorimeter workbenches are explicitly reused low-level tools from this course. This destination adds a distinct multi-module argument and transfer, not a second claim of completing those introductory lessons. Supplied/simulated records must remain labeled as such. No unknown substance is to be handled, heated or irradiated. No physical technique, verified instructor identity or independent mastery is certified. Conceptual references checked 30 October 2026: OpenStax chemical analysis, atomic evidence, calorimetry, molecular structure. All prose and cases are original.

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

How would a wrong stoichiometric equivalent count bias molar enthalpy even if the temperature measurement were exact?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
