Read a longitudinal evolution study without inventing observations

Evolution can be investigated in records spanning generations, not only inferred from distant fossils.

Learning outcome: Write one sentence reporting the published result and a separate sentence describing the synthetic packet, without merging them.

Starting recap

Evolution can be investigated in records spanning generations, not only inferred from distant fossils. In a 2008 primary study, Blount, Borland and Lenski reported aerobic citrate use arising in one of twelve long-term experimental E. coli populations. Their historical comparisons supported dependence on earlier evolutionary changes.

Experiment

Select “Read a longitudinal evolution study without inventing observations” in the case control. Compare both evidence conditions. Record the quantities, calculate the worked comparison and justify your claim with a stated alternative. The supplied records are synthetic practice, not a conducted experiment.

The synthetic first-lineage contrast is45−0=45 percentage points. It is not a 45% relative increase from baseline, because division by the zero baseline is undefined.

Mechanism before a label

Evolution can be investigated in records spanning generations, not only inferred from distant fossils. In a 2008 primary study, Blount, Borland and Lenski reported aerobic citrate use arising in one of twelve long-term experimental E. coli populations. Their historical comparisons supported dependence on earlier evolutionary changes.

That published finding is distinct from the synthetic arithmetic packet below, which is not a transcription of their measurements. Read the paper for the actual populations, dates, methods and limitations. This lesson supplies no culturing procedure or instructions for evolving microorganisms.

A longitudinal increase in a trait frequency is evidence of population change, but the mechanism still needs controls. Historical contingency means that prior changes affect later accessible outcomes; it does not mean evolution is purposeful or that every repeated population must follow the same trajectory.

Connect ongoing change to a selective environment

Resistance can increase when existing or newly arising heritable variants contribute unequally under a selective exposure. The exposure does not instruct an organism to make the needed mutation. Similar population reasoning applies to pesticide or herbicide resistance and to evolving pathogen traits, but disease emergence also depends on ecology, host contact and detection; a new outbreak alone does not prove a new mutation. Current CED 7.8.A.1, checked 31 October 2026. This is conceptual interpretation, with no selection, culture or exposure procedure.

Changed record: Two archived fictional samples have a heritable variant at 5% and later 40%. The later environment favors its reproductive contribution. Does this prove the variant first arose after the environmental change?

Check timing and mechanism

No: the earlier sample already contains the variant. Its increase is compatible with selection but migration, drift and sampling must also be considered. A contemporaneous increase in detected disease would require separate host, transmission and ascertainment evidence rather than being attributed automatically to this variant.

Predict, compare and calculate

The following record is an original synthetic teaching dataset. Its assigned conditions are not a claim that an actual organism was measured. Write your prediction before revealing the changed condition.

Apply to a new case

Write one sentence reporting the published result and a separate sentence describing the synthetic packet, without merging them.

Compare your reasoning with the worked response

The published study reported evolution of aerobic citrate use in one of twelve long-term populations and evidence of historical contingency. Separately, this lesson’s invented lineage rises from 0% to 45%; those numbers are not measurements from the paper.

This public response supplies feedback, not a score for independent reasoning. Record which part of your prediction changed and why.

Evidence and investigation boundary

No inference about the real study’s rate can use these numbers. Failure to observe the trait in a finite sample does not prove zero underlying frequency.

For a supervised investigation, predeclare the question, biological unit of replication, treatment/comparison assignment, quantities and units, exclusion rules, graph and uncertainty method. Keep the raw records and the first prediction separate from later revisions. A simulated case does not supply laboratory hours or establish AP authorization. No physical manipulation is required by this lesson.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
