Understand

Mechanism before a label

Crossing over exchanges corresponding DNA between nonsister chromatids of paired homologs during prophase I. It can produce a chromosome with a new combination of alleles while preserving the underlying locus order in a simple reciprocal exchange.

Independent orientation of different homolog pairs creates additional combinations at meiosis I. A diploid organism with n pairs can produce 2^n combinations from assortment alone, ignoring crossing over. This formula counts possible arrangements, not equally observed offspring in a small sample.

Genes on the same chromosome can be linked. Recombination can separate their alleles, but closely spaced loci may rarely recombine. A model that assumes independent assortment for every pair of genes will fail when physical linkage matters.

Trace a segregation error rather than labeling every product abnormal

Normal meiosis separates homologous chromosomes in the first division and sister chromatids in the second, leaving one member of each chromosome pair in each haploid product. Nondisjunction means a pair fails to separate. The resulting chromosome imbalance depends on which division and which lineage are affected; not every product of an affected meiosis must be abnormal.

Original four-product comparison: In a 2n=6 cell, stipulate that one homolog pair fails to separate at meiosis I, followed by otherwise normal meiosis II. Compare this with normal meiosis I followed by failure of sister separation for one chromosome in only one of the two meiosis-II cells. Count chromosomes in all four final nuclei, treating each separated chromatid as a chromosome. Assume no other segregation error or product loss.

Check the division-specific products

The first history gives 4, 4, 2 and 2 chromosomes: two n+1 and two n−1 products. The second gives 4, 2, 3 and 3: one n+1, one n−1 and two normal n products. Thus a normal-count product does not by itself rule out an error elsewhere in that meiosis. These are fictional nuclear products, not a claim that every organism forms four functional gametes or that counts diagnose an organism's condition.

Chromosomal nondisjunction mechanisms, checked 31 October 2026, support the division distinction. The current CED’s short statement that gametes cease to be haploid is applied to the affected products rather than incorrectly universalized to all products.

Apply to a new case

A student uses 2^3=8 to claim exactly eight children from a three-pair organism must have different genomes. Repair the claim.

Compare your reasoning with the worked response

Eight is the number of assortment combinations under the simplified model, not a required sample outcome. Gametes can repeat combinations, crossing over adds possibilities, and fertilization combines two gametes.

This public response supplies feedback, not a score for independent reasoning. Record which part of your prediction changed and why.

Evidence and investigation boundary

Observed recombinant fraction is an estimate, not a direct exact distance. A 50% recombinant fraction cannot distinguish those alternatives by itself.

For a supervised investigation, predeclare the question, biological unit of replication, treatment/comparison assignment, quantities and units, exclusion rules, graph and uncertainty method. Keep the raw records and the first prediction separate from later revisions. A simulated case does not supply laboratory hours or establish AP authorization. No physical manipulation is required by this lesson.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
