Track energy flow and distinguish production from standing biomass

Energy enters ecosystems through primary producers and moves through food webs as organisms consume organic material.

Learning outcome: A lake has low instantaneous producer biomass but rapid producer turnover. Can consumer biomass temporarily exceed producer biomass without violating energy conservation?

Starting recap

Energy enters ecosystems through primary producers and moves through food webs as organisms consume organic material. Energy is transformed and dispersed as heat through metabolism; unlike chemical elements, it is not recycled indefinitely through trophic levels.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Predict

Before opening the changed condition, predict which measurement would discriminate the explanation in track energy flow and distinguish production from standing biomass.

Experiment

Select “Track energy flow and distinguish production from standing biomass” in the case control. Compare both evidence conditions. Record the quantities, calculate the worked comparison and justify your claim with a stated alternative. The supplied records are synthetic practice, not a conducted experiment.

Do not divide by gross production when the requested denominator is net producer production.

Compare with the conditional interpretation

NPP=750; herbivore production/NPP=90/750=12%.

1200−450=750 kJ m⁻² y⁻¹ is available as net producer production. The ratio90/750=0.12 has no energy units because the numerator and denominator share units and interval.

Understand

Mechanism before a label

Energy enters ecosystems through primary producers and moves through food webs as organisms consume organic material. Energy is transformed and dispersed as heat through metabolism; unlike chemical elements, it is not recycled indefinitely through trophic levels.

Gross primary productivity is the rate of energy fixation. Net primary productivity subtracts producer respiration: NPP=GPP−R. Specify area and time units. Standing biomass is an amount present at a moment, not the rate at which biomass is produced.

Trophic transfer efficiency compares production at adjacent levels over matching boundaries and intervals. A ten-percent value is a teaching approximation, not a universal constant. Decomposers process material from multiple trophic levels, returning elements while also respiring energy.

Organism budgets connect metabolism to reproduction

An organism allocates assimilated energy among maintenance, activity, growth and reproduction, with additional losses and storage changes depending on the chosen boundary. Endotherms generate substantial metabolic heat to regulate temperature; ectotherms depend more strongly on environmental heat sources. Neither label means that temperature or metabolism is absolutely constant, and behavior can modify heat exchange in both groups.

Environmental conditions can also alter reproductive timing or, in some species capable of both modes, the balance between sexual and asexual reproduction. Changing reproductive allocation amount is not the same claim as changing reproductive mode; neither response is a universal switch across organisms.

A cold condition can raise an endotherm’s maintenance cost, while an ectotherm’s activity and metabolic rate can change with body temperature. Food availability and temperature therefore can alter the energy left for growth or reproduction; the direction depends on the species and conditions, not a universal superiority of either strategy.

Original budget exercise: An organism assimilates 100 kJ/day and spends 60 on maintenance and 20 on activity, leaving 20 for combined growth, reproduction and storage. A changed condition raises maintenance to 75 with intake and activity unchanged: the remainder is 5 kJ/day. This does not predict exactly how many offspring occur; it identifies a reduced allocation budget under stated assumptions. Predict whether increased intake could offset that change, and name a measurement needed before assigning the remainder specifically to reproduction.

Identify the organizational and energy-source boundary

A population consists of interacting members of one species; a community includes populations of different species. An ecosystem includes that community and its nonliving environment and exchanges. A biome groups broad ecological regions with characteristic conditions and communities; it is not one individual food chain. OpenStax ecological scope, checked 31 October 2026.

Autotrophy identifies inorganic carbon as a source for organic synthesis, not necessarily sunlight as the energy source. Photoautotrophs use light; chemoautotrophs obtain energy from chemical redox reactions involving inorganic substances. Some such pathways operate without oxygen, while others require it. Heterotrophy identifies an organic carbon source. Many chemoheterotrophs obtain energy by oxidizing organic compounds, whereas photoheterotrophs can use light for energy while retaining organic carbon requirements. Carbon source and energy source are distinct classifications. OpenStax ecosystem energy sources, checked 31 October 2026.

Changed case: A fictional dark ecosystem has primary producers fixing carbon dioxide while using an independently supplied chemical energy source. Must its primary productivity be zero? Does counting one producer species describe the whole ecosystem?

Check source and scale

No. Chemical energy can support autotrophic carbon fixation without light under a suitable pathway; absence of light is not absence of every energy input. One species count describes a population component, not all species, abiotic reservoirs and fluxes. Determine the actual energy and electron-acceptor supply before predicting productivity.

Worked reasoning

1200−450=750 kJ m⁻² y⁻¹ is available as net producer production. The ratio90/750=0.12 has no energy units because the numerator and denominator share units and interval.

NPP=750; herbivore production/NPP=90/750=12%.

Apply to a new case

A lake has low instantaneous producer biomass but rapid producer turnover. Can consumer biomass temporarily exceed producer biomass without violating energy conservation?

Compare your reasoning with the worked response

Yes. Biomass stocks are not production rates. Rapidly replaced producers can support larger standing consumer biomass; compare energy fluxes across consistent intervals, not stock ratios alone.

This public response supplies feedback, not a score for independent reasoning. Record which part of your prediction changed and why.

Evidence and investigation boundary

Do not divide by gross production when the requested denominator is net producer production. This arithmetic scenario does not assert real herbivores remain unchanged after every respiration shift.

For a supervised investigation, predeclare the question, biological unit of replication, treatment/comparison assignment, quantities and units, exclusion rules, graph and uncertainty method. Keep the raw records and the first prediction separate from later revisions. A simulated case does not supply laboratory hours or establish AP authorization. No physical manipulation is required by this lesson.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.
