Preserve a failed design and justify a revision
Turn matched captures into a reproducible failure log and a bounded design claim.
Learning outcome: Document a failed requirement, compare a revised candidate and distinguish simulated verification from physical validation.
Starting recap
A criterion is checked separately; a good average or lower energy use cannot compensate for a hard-limit failure.
All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.
Try
Insulated gain 2 W/K fails the tail band; insulated gain 6 W/K stays near 30.77°C by the end.
Open the experimentPredict
Before changing gain, predict which criterion may improve and whether token cost changes.
Experiment
Keep the insulated gain-2 capture. Change only gain to 6 W/K, capture the full 120 s run, and compare every requirement. Record the symptom, mechanism hypothesis, changed input and retest outcome.
Compare matched thermal designs
Original matched thermal devices · synthetic requirements · Original fictional one-node device and assigned costs. Uniform temperature, constant heat capacity/conductance/ambient, held heater input and exact exponential propagation within each sample. No spatial gradient, evaporation, radiation law, random noise, active cooling, integral control or physical safety/efficiency/reliability certification. Public cases are exposed teaching practice. Nominal scenario and zero sensor correction are fixed; a/b select hardware and gain.
Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.
Compare hardware with the same controller setting
Active design: Standard enclosure. Both runs start at 20°C, use the same selected gain of 6 W/K, nominal sensing, zero correction and a 20 W heater limit for twelve 10-second intervals. They share heat capacity 100 J/K and ambient 20°C. Standard conductance is 1 W/K; insulated conductance is 0.5 W/K. Costs are 3 and 5 fictional tokens.
The controller requests 10 W + gain × (30°C − corrected indication). The actuator clips this request to 0–20 W; there is no active cooling. The fixed 10 W term is a standard-enclosure feedforward assumption, not integral control. Changing insulation alone can change the final temperature as well as energy demand.
- 1. Sense and correctTrue temperature → raw indication → subtract selected correction. This lab uses current sensing with no bias or correction.
- 2. Request and limit powerCorrected indication is information for the controller. Requested watts become bounded applied watts at the actuator.
- 3. Account for energyApplied heater energy enters the thermal node; stored energy changes and signed heat transfers to ambient. The next true temperature feeds the sensor.
These are original synthetic device assumptions. The exact exponential solution describes a uniform thermal node under constant power during each interval, not measured material performance or a physical prototype.
Solid navy: active Standard enclosure. Long-dashed brown: matched Insulated enclosure. Dotted red with circles: active corrected indication at command times. Gray dashes: 30°C target. Pale band: 29–31°C criterion range, required only from 90 s onward.
Lines connect sampled states for comparison; they are not the exact curved path between samples. In this nominal case sensor points coincide with the true state at command times; there is no terminal command at 120 s.
Horizontal segments are held inputs, not a smooth ramp. Requested power is tabulated rather than plotted on the applied-power scale. At least one request is outside 0–20 W; the actuator limits it.

| True trajectory peak ≤32°C | 29.999°C at 120 s Meets supplied criterion | 30.768°C at 120 s Meets supplied criterion |
| Applied heater energy ≤2000 J | 1887.809 J Meets supplied criterion | 1558.581 J Meets supplied criterion |
| Resource cost ≤6 tokens | 3 tokens Meets supplied criterion | 5 tokens Meets supplied criterion |
| All four supplied requirements | All met in this model run | All met in this model run |
Each exact held-input interval moves monotonically toward its fixed equilibrium. Therefore interval endpoints bound the continuous peak, and the 90–120 s endpoint checks also bound the temperature between those samples in this particular model. This argument does not extend automatically to a real device or another plant model. Lower energy cannot cancel a failed temperature criterion.

Active design: all twelve command and energy receipts
Requested observation time and effective sample time are separate fields. Correction is subtracted from the raw indication. Positive ambient energy is outward; a negative value would mean inward transfer. Displayed rounding may leave a tiny apparent balance difference.

Active whole-run ledger: 1887.808894 J heater input = 999.864807 J stored-energy change + 887.944087 J signed transfer to ambient. Model residual: -1.14e-13 J. Energy accounting agreement does not validate the device physically.
Your comparison: predict which hardware change reduces energy, then inspect whether every requirement still passes. Capture both hardware settings at the same gain and explain one mechanism or trade-off. Repeating this deterministic run checks reproducibility, not field reliability or a new independent trial.
Final true temperature 29.999 degC; heater input 1887.809 J.
Peak 29.999 degC at 120 s; cost 3 assigned tokens. Tail band met; peak limit met; energy budget met; resource budget met. Synthetic model evidence, not a physical prototype or reliability estimate.
Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.
State the narrow claim supported by the revision and propose a genuinely new-condition test. Disclose that all shipped comparisons and worked answers are public practice.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.
Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.
Save a science backup or import one
Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.
A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.
Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.
Complete file sets and course backups
A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.
The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.
0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
