SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Close a pollutant pulse account

Follow parent mass through export and transformation without confusing their destinations.

Learning outcome: Calculate ordered fractional operations and preserve the parent-equivalent balance.

Starting recap

The 1000-L store receives source mass before export and transformation; steps have no physical duration.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

From 40 g, exporting 25% leaves 30; transforming 25% of that converts 7.5 and leaves 22.5 g.

Open the experiment

Predict

Will export-only and transformation-only have different remaining-parent curves?

Experiment

Capture the two single-fate cases at a single pulse, then inspect the combined first-step ledger.

Trace a pollutant pulse and its fate accounts

Original batch pulse · separate observed water-quality record · Original hypothetical parent substance in a well-mixed 1000 L store. Four discrete operations add supplied parent mass, export an aliquot and replace it with equal clean water, then transform a fraction of remaining parent. Step duration is unspecified. Transformation tracks original-parent equivalent, not product mass or harmlessness. No dose, ecological effect or safety inference is calculated.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Where did the parent substance go?

Single 40 g pulse; Export only: 25% exchange. Predict the final parent mass and its destinations before comparing captures. This fictional, well-mixed water store starts with zero parent substance in 1000 L. The four steps have no specified physical duration. Inputs and fractions are supplied teaching assumptions, not measured chemical rates.

  1. Add the supplied parent mass with negligible water volume.
  2. Export 25% of the mixed water and its parent substance, then replace it with the same volume of parent-free water. The store returns to 1000 L.
  3. Transform 0% of the parent remaining after exchange. Track the amount converted as original-parent equivalent.
  4. Record remaining parent and both cumulative fate accounts before the next addition.

Exported parent leaves this boundary; its downstream fate is not calculated. Transformed-parent equivalent means grams of original parent converted. It is not product mass, destruction of matter, mineralization or proof of harmlessness. Co-reactants and products are not explicitly modeled. This hypothetical transformable parent must not be relabeled an element such as lead that ordinary chemistry cannot destroy.

Final parent-equivalent balance: 40 g supplied = 12.65625 g parent remaining + 27.34375 g parent exported + 0 g original-parent equivalent transformed. Residual: 0 g.

Final parent concentration is 12.65625 mg/L. Convert grams to milligrams, then divide by 1000 L. Mass in grams and concentration in mg/L happen to have the same numerical value only because this store holds 1000 L. They remain different quantities.

Exact arithmetic, not implied measurement precision. Mass columns use g; concentration columns use mg/L.

Across the four operations, 1000 L leaves and 1000 L replaces it; final volume remains 1000 L. This is ordered batch exchange, not continuous flow. The transformation account does not track products' subsequent export or reactions.

Equal parent histories can hide different fates

Compare the single pulse with export only and transformation only. Both end at 30, 22.5, 16.875 and 12.65625 g parent. In the export case, 27.34375 g parent moved outside the store. In the transformation case, 27.34375 g original-parent equivalent was converted. Identical parent concentration histories do not establish identical products, exposures or effects.

Compare the single pulse and repeated additions under the same fate profile. Each supplies 40 g total, but its timing differs. A higher final parent store is an accounting result, not a prediction of organism uptake, food-chain magnification or biological harm.

Unavailable outputs: biological effect, internal dose and product mass are not calculated. No safe/unsafe label follows from these accounts, including the zero-source control. There is no duration from which to calculate exposure-time integrals or half-life.

Check the sequential operations and a dilution transfer

For a 40 g pulse with both operations, export removes 10 g, leaving 30 g. Transformation converts 7.5 g of that remainder, leaving 22.5 g. The two operations account for 43.75% of the original parent, not 50%; the second percentage uses a different starting amount.

Separate paper case: 12 g in 600 L is 20 mg/L. Adding 600 L clean water without exporting any parent gives 10 mg/L in 1200 L, while parent mass remains 12 g. That is dilution, not transformation or destruction. This paper case changes volume and is not a selectable recipe in the fixed-volume lab.

Final parent 12.65625 g; concentration 12.65625 mg/L in 1000 L.

40 g supplied parent = 12.65625 g remaining + 27.34375 g exported + 0 g transformed-parent equivalent. Products and biological effects are not calculated.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Account for what leaves the parent-substance store

Select Single pulse and Export only. Predict whether four steps will remove all parent substance from the water store. The model begins with zero parent mass in 1,000 L, then receives 40 g at the start of the first step. No further source is added in this packet. Each step is an accounting operation without a physical duration, so it is not a day or an hour.

The substance and fractions are original teaching assumptions. No chemical-specific measured rate or treatment efficiency is supplied. Keep the source and fate selections with your capture so another reader can reproduce exactly the same conditional account.

Follow one ordered operation

After a source addition, before-fate mass B equals previous remaining mass plus new source. Export removes the selected fraction e of B. For export-only, e = 0.25, so the first operation exports 10 g and leaves 30 g.

This export removes 250 L of well-mixed water, then replaces it with 250 L of parent-free water. Volume remains 1,000 L. It is not adding clean water to an ever-growing volume or exporting pure substance without water. Subsequent operations act on the newly remaining parent mass.

The end-step sequence is 30, 22.5, 16.875 and 12.65625 g. Cumulative exported parent is 27.34375 g. Check 40 = 12.65625 + 27.34375. A fixed fraction of a shrinking amount is a shrinking exported amount, which explains why parent remains after four steps.

Compare equal curves with different destinations

Keep the single pulse and select Transformation only. The remaining-parent sequence is identical, but exported parent is zero and transformed-parent equivalent totals 27.34375 g. Capture both cases and write a statement that their parent curves cannot distinguish.

Transformed-parent equivalent means grams of original parent converted. It is not product mass, destruction of matter, complete mineralization or demonstrated harmlessness. Product identities, co-reactants and product quantities are not supplied. A downstream export account and an unmodeled product account pose different questions even when local parent concentration is the same.

Combine operations in their actual order

Choose Export then transformation. First-step source 40 g loses 10 through export. Transformation acts on the remaining 30, converting 0.25 × 30 = 7.5 g parent equivalent. End mass is 22.5 g. The combined fraction removed from the parent store is 17.5/40 = 43.75%, not 50%: the second percentage uses a different base.

After four steps, remaining parent is about 4.00452 g, exported parent about 20.56885 g and transformed equivalent about 15.42664 g. Retain full displayed precision when checking their sum of 40. The ledger is cumulative source = remaining parent + exported parent + transformed equivalent. These are parent-equivalent accounts, not a complete product-element balance.

Keep concentration and mass separate

For this particular 1,000-L store, grams remaining are numerically equal to milligrams per liter: multiply grams by 1,000 mg/g and divide by 1,000 L. That numerical coincidence is not a general identity between mass and concentration. Dilution practice explores a different volume change; it must not be confused with this fixed-volume exchange.

Transfer: repair a dilution claim

A separate vessel contains 12 g in 600 L. Add 600 L clean water without exporting or transforming any parent. Calculate the new concentration and explain whether half the substance was destroyed.

Check the pollutant-pulse transfer

Initial concentration is 20 mg/L. The new 1,200-L volume contains the same 12,000 mg, giving 10 mg/L. Mass is unchanged: dilution lowered concentration without export or transformation. This separate paper case is not a selectable fixed-volume recipe, and neither concentration alone establishes an ecological effect.

Two sequential 25% operations on a 40 g pulse leave:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Distinguish parent disappearance from product mass, exported fate or demonstrated harmlessness.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
