SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Separate electromagnetic frequency from photon arrival rate

Electromagnetic wavelength and frequency describe the wave, while photon energy describes a quantum of that radiation. In vacuum, frequency ν=c/λ and energy E=hν=hc/λ. Shorter wavelengths carry more energy per photon. Radio, infrared, visible, ultraviolet and higher-energy bands are not different kinds of matter; their interactions with instruments and intervening material differ because wavelength and energy differ.

Learning outcome: Change wavelength at fixed power, then power at fixed wavelength. Close photon energy times arrival rate against power, retain SI conversions and explain why detector efficiency would be an additional factor.

At 600 nm and 2 μW, frequency is≈4.99654×10^14 Hz, photon energy≈3.31074×10^−19 J or 2.06640 eV, and expected photon rate≈6.04094×10^12 per second. The wave frequency and photon rate are different quantities with different controlling inputs.

Separate photon number, frequency and radiant power

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original monochromatic beam; exact SI c and h, frequency c/λ, photon energy hc/λ and expected photon rate P/E. No detector efficiency, bandwidth or actual laser/observation procedure.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

At the same power, longer-wavelength photons arrive in larger numbers because each carries less energy.

Frequency is wave cycles per second, while photon rate counts quanta and depends on power. Neither is the detector count unless collection and efficiency are separately specified.

Understand

1. Define the light and measurement

2. Connect physical and instrumental mechanisms

The original monochromatic example supplies wavelength in nanometers and radiant power in microwatts. Convert both to SI before dividing power by photon energy. The expected arrival rate is P/E photons per second. It is not the wave frequency: changing power changes the photon rate without changing the frequency of each monochromatic component.

The model uses exact SI c and h and converts joules to electronvolts with the exact elementary-charge conversion. A real astronomical spectrum has a range of wavelengths, so a total count would integrate spectral power divided by wavelength-dependent photon energy and multiply collection/throughput factors. A single representative wavelength is not always an adequate replacement.

Atmospheric transmission and detector sensitivity select which incoming photons are recorded. Absorbed or undetected photons do not become counted events merely because they carry energy. This original budget is not a laser operation, solar-viewing exercise or actual detector calibration; it separates physical quantities before later collection and noise calculations.

3. Work the evidence

4. Predict and investigate

At fixed radiant power, does doubling wavelength increase or decrease the photon arrival rate?

Change wavelength at fixed power, then power at fixed wavelength. Close photon energy times arrival rate against power, retain SI conversions and explain why detector efficiency would be an additional factor.

Apply the evidence to a changed case

Compare 400 and 800 nm at the same 2 μW power. Give the changes in frequency, photon energy and photon rate.

Retain the evidence frame, calculations and assumptions before opening public feedback.

Compare a worked response

At 800 nm, frequency and photon energy are half their 400 nm values, while photon rate doubles from≈4.02729×10^12 to≈8.05459×10^12 per second. Equal power does not mean equal photon count.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
