Keep aperture resolution distinct from light-gathering power

Diffraction spreads an ideal point-source image even through a perfectly made aperture. For the stated Rayleigh criterion and an unobstructed circular aperture, angular scale is 1.22λ/D radians. This is an idealized point-pair criterion, not a claim that every extended source feature at that spacing is recoverable.

Learning outcome: Change aperture and wavelength separately, retain radians-to-arcseconds conversion and area, and explain which missing point-spread, sampling or contrast evidence prevents a guaranteed resolving claim.

Keep photon energy/count, density convention, propagation, collection/resolution, calibration and source-quality assumptions distinct.

At D=1 m and λ=400 nm, the ideal angle is 4.88×10^−7 radians≈0.100658 arcsec, slightly larger than the 0.1 arcsec pair. At D=2 m the diffraction scale halves to≈0.050329 arcsec; both it and the separately supplied 0.08 arcsec width are below the pair separation, without guaranteeing a real detection.

Doubling diameter halves the ideal angle and quadruples area. Seeing, sampling and contrast can still limit the observation; two separate scale checks are not an exact convolution or a guarantee of resolving a real pair.

Understand

1. Define the light and measurement

2. Connect physical and instrumental mechanisms

The original comparison supplies a pair separation of 0.1 arcsec and a separate atmospheric width of 0.08 arcsec. It asks whether the separation exceeds both listed scales. That is a bounded comparison, not an exact convolution of an Airy pattern with an atmospheric point-spread function. Detector sampling, contrast, signal-to-noise and aberrations remain additional evidence.

At fixed wavelength, doubling D halves the diffraction angle while quadrupling collecting area. At fixed D, doubling wavelength doubles the angle without changing geometric area. These distinct dependencies explain why a collecting-power calculation cannot substitute for a resolution calculation and why observations in different bands can resolve different structures.

Atmospheric seeing can dominate a large ground-based aperture, while adaptive correction and space observatories have their own limitations. The fixed width here is an original supplied value, not a forecast for an observing site. No instrument aiming, solar viewing or actual resolving-performance claim is requested.

3. Work the evidence

4. Predict and investigate

Does quadrupling collected photon count by doubling aperture also quarter the diffraction angle?

Change aperture and wavelength separately, retain radians-to-arcseconds conversion and area, and explain which missing point-spread, sampling or contrast evidence prevents a guaranteed resolving claim.

Apply the evidence to a changed case

At 800 nm, compare D=1 and 2 m. Which scale comparison changes and which atmospheric input stays fixed?

Retain the evidence frame, calculations and assumptions before opening public feedback.

Compare a worked response

Ideal diffraction angles are≈0.201316 and≈0.100658 arcsec, so both remain slightly above the supplied 0.1 arcsec separation. Atmospheric width stays 0.08 arcsec. Doubling area dimensions helps, but the fixed threshold still matters.

Doubling aperture diameter at fixed wavelength does what to ideal angle and collecting area?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
