Why learn this? Use a reproducible comparison to make a bounded claim about compare world model research approaches, while keeping development practice separate from independent review.

01 · TRY

Start with something concrete.

Two papers both say “world model.” One generates frames, another predicts representations. Are their scores interchangeable?

Back to the experiment

A shorter explanation, with the original worked examples available below. Both explain the same experiment and its limits.

Same learning goal in both modes: Compare dated prediction targets and control mechanisms without ranking incompatible evaluations.

Start with a concrete question

Two papers both say “world model.” One generates frames, another predicts representations. Are their scores interchangeable?

What to inspect

Compare the three source cards. Write what is predicted, what conditions it, how actions are selected and a missing test for each.

The phrase world model covers several different research choices. DreamerV3, reported in Nature in 2025, learns latent dynamics and trains behavior using imagined trajectories. V-JEPA 2, a 2025 paper, predicts representations from video and studies action-conditioned post-training for robot planning. Genie, introduced in 2024, studies action-controllable generated environments from unlabelled video. These are dated examples, not a claim to list the latest or best systems.

Keep the conclusion bounded

The small Course 12 labs expose specific mechanisms with bounded data and compute. They do not reproduce any of these large research systems. Do not compare an error from the teaching model numerically with a paper’s benchmark success score. Use the linked primary source to locate its baselines, budget and failure cases, then state one claim supported only in that setting. Choosing a research branch means choosing a falsifiable comparison and resources you can actually reproduce.

Place each method in the same evidence worksheet: input data, predicted quantity, action representation, controller, environment and external outcome. Distinguish a prediction metric from task completion. An attractive generated frame can still have inconsistent physical consequences; low representation loss can discard a distinction needed for control. Conversely, a control policy may tolerate some prediction error that looks large in pixel space.
