INVESTIGATION 6 OF 6

Prepare a release you can explain and correct

Perform a claim audit, prepare an accessible publication package and write a specific correction procedure.

Why learn this? Publication readiness includes source fidelity, context and a way to repair errors—not just a polished final draft.

Quick recap: A release can be a private document handed to a reviewer. Public posting is optional. A claim audit traces consequential assertions to evidence and checks that the published wording preserves its limits.

Lesson activities

Choose either at any time. Your drafts stay with you.

1. Try — read before judging

Original fictional release problem. The course does not post externally or certify the work as fact-checked. Treat the public version below as a simulated earlier draft.

  1. VERSION 1: “The café permanently repaired 24 objects.”
  2. AUDIT: The source log records 24 arrivals and only 10 objects working at departure. There was no follow-up.
  3. MISSING ACCESS: A chart shows outcomes using colors alone and has no numerical text equivalent.
  4. RELEASE TASK: Correct the claim, add a text equivalent and prepare a transparent correction note.
  5. REFLECTION TASK: Explain which parts of the process you performed independently and which used the supplied packet or simulated feedback.

2. Predict — make a provisional choice

3. Experiment — test your reading

  1. Create a card for the controlling source, then draft a claim-audit table: assertion, source/locator, supported wording and unresolved issue.
  2. Write a version-2 release note and a correction naming the original error. Supply all chart values and labels in text, with the outcome timing.
  3. Draft a process reflection distinguishing source discovery, packet analysis, editing and external review. Export the portfolio as the private release; do not claim public publication or independent verification.

Your source dossier

Keep source wording, your paraphrase and your reasoning in separate fields. Locators are stored as plain text; the site does not fetch or verify them. Label fictional teaching sources as fictional.

4. Understand — connect choice and effect

Release the evidence trail with the writing

Audit the claims readers are most likely to repeat: headline numbers, causal statements, quotations and summary conclusions. For each, record the source and locator, the exact supported wording and any unresolved question. If a claim has no adequate source, narrow it, label it as a hypothesis or remove it.

The release problem contains two errors: arrivals were called repairs, and immediate status was called permanence. Correct both. The replacement should retain the denominator and timing: ten working, eight awaiting parts and six not repaired at departure, out of twenty-four arrivals. A generic note about minor clarifications would hide the substance of the mistake.

Give a visual’s essential information in text. A color-only outcome chart needs category names and numerical values that remain understandable without the colors. Its caption must also identify what was measured and when. An attractive chart with an inaccurate caption is not ready for release.

Prepare the correction procedure before it is needed. Identify the version, preserve the error in an editorial record, state the replacement and consider how readers of the earlier copy would receive the notice. For this course, a downloaded private review copy is a sufficient release; no external posting is required.

Finally, reflect on the work actually performed. Distinguish analyzing a supplied packet from finding sources, simulated feedback from peer review, and self-checking from independent verification. A finished document and an honest process account are useful achievements without claiming expertise the project has not demonstrated.

Claim audit
A check linking important assertions to sources and verifying that wording matches their evidence and limitations.
Release package
The final artifact together with sources, accessible equivalents, version information and relevant review or correction notes.
Worked example — a possible revision, not the only answer

Before

Updated with minor clarifications.

After

Correction: Version 1 confused objects brought to the event with objects working at departure and described repairs as permanent without follow-up. Version 2 reports 10 working, 8 awaiting parts and 6 not repaired at closing, out of 24 arrivals.

The correction names the errors and replacement facts. It does not imply the original statement was accurate before circumstances changed.

5. Apply — make something and try a new case

Your main artifact

Prepare a private release package: final feature, source notes, numerical text equivalent, correction and a 150-word process reflection.

Keep your artifact in the working draft above. Suggested lengths help you plan; they do not measure quality.

Unfamiliar passage

A private class report says “all respondents preferred option A.” The source table records 7 for A, 2 for B and 1 unanswered. A chart labels the total as 9 people.

6. Continue — record work without claiming mastery

Completion means you worked through this investigation. Your interpretation and writing still need judgment using the project rubric; no automatic proficiency score is awarded.
