International relations

Evaluate security beyond a single total

Security can refer to state protection and to people's access to safety, food and livelihoods.

Your task: Produce a decision table with security, livelihood and health outcomes. Identify one missing denominator and propose a nonpartisan evaluation.

Starting recap and vocabulary

Read a record as a claim with a creator, purpose and scope. A count, interpretation and value judgment are different kinds of evidence. Percent means per hundred; percentage points compare two percentages.

interdependence
A situation in which actors' choices affect one another
teaching record
An authored fictional example designed to make reasoning inspectable; not evidence that an event occurred.

Connect evidence and mechanism

Evaluate security beyond a single total

Security can refer to state protection and to people’s access to safety, food and livelihoods. A policy that improves one indicator can worsen another. Evaluate distribution, intended mechanisms and evidence of effects rather than treating one aggregate as sufficient.

Inspect the case

Teaching border policy reduces recorded crossings from 100 to 60. The record covers only monitored gates.

Teaching relief report records longer travel to clinics and more attempted remote crossings. Counts are incomplete and may reflect changed reporting.

Both records are original fictional teaching materials. They are not historical primary sources and do not report real participants.

Work through the mechanism

A 40-percent decline at monitored gates is not necessarily a 40-percent decline in all movement or harm. Location and measurement changed.

Your investigation

Produce a decision table with security, livelihood and health outcomes. Identify one missing denominator and propose a nonpartisan evaluation.

Make a two-column evidence table: what the record directly supports, and what you infer. Use record IDs when connecting observations to claims. Preserve your first interpretation before revising it.

Practice and transfer

What does the gate record directly establish?

Try the practice check in the activity, explain your choice, then apply the idea to this unfamiliar case: A new policy increases reporting of abuse. What rival explanation should be considered?

Limits and responsible interpretation

Do not assign learners refugee, victim or perpetrator roles. Use document analysis and avoid treating people as units of strategic payoff.

A successful answer identifies a mechanism and its boundaries. A saved response records practice; it does not automatically establish independent understanding.

AP connection: Use this as optional interdisciplinary evidence practice; there is no standalone AP International relations course. Compare two explanations using the supplied records and state a limitation.

Introductory college: Frame a researchable version of the case, document definitions and source selection, and compare the supplied mechanism with a rival explanation. Use the linked disciplinary reading to find one relevant scholarly or institutional source; distinguish that real source from these fictional records. Submit a revision log and methods note.
