Starting recap and vocabulary

Self-determination concerns political choice; a new flag alone does not measure the range of choices available.

self-determination
The principle that peoples determine their political status and pursue development.
commodity dependence
Reliance on a narrow range of primary products for revenue or exports.
01 · TRY

How did newly independent states pursue goals beyond choosing a Cold War bloc?

Build a comparison with four headings: route to independence, boundaries and displacement, policy autonomy, and development priorities. Annotate what the UN clause asserts. Use the fictional export data to explain why sovereignty and economic diversification are distinct without dismissing either.

Separate legal sovereignty from two economic indicators.

Decolonization: sovereignty, partition and nonalignment

How did newly independent states pursue goals beyond choosing a Cold War bloc?

Context and mechanism

Decolonization was a set of struggles, negotiations and institutional transformations, not a single date when empires voluntarily departed. Political organization, labor action, armed struggle, international pressure and changing imperial resources mattered differently across cases. India and Pakistan’s independence and partition in 1947 illustrates why a transfer of sovereignty can coexist with displacement and conflict. Other cases require their own chronology and evidence; one route should not become a universal model.

The 1955 Bandung conference assembled Asian and African governments around concerns including cooperation, colonial rule and peaceful coexistence. These participants had differing political systems and interests. Their meeting challenges a narrative in which every decision was made by Washington or Moscow. Shared principles could support coordination without eliminating disagreements among the participants.

The 1960 UN declaration on colonial independence expressed self-determination as a right of all peoples. Read it as a normative intervention within ongoing struggles. Its adoption does not prove that every colony immediately became independent, that every border dispute was resolved, or that all citizens gained equal influence within a new state. International language can become a resource for organizing while enforcement remains contested.

After formal independence, governments confronted inherited transport systems, commodity dependence, administrative institutions and unequal access to education and land. Development strategies included public investment, industrial promotion and attempts to change trade relationships. Evaluate their objectives and consequences with dated evidence rather than assuming either that independence solved everything or that nothing changed.

Nonalignment meant seeking room for political action outside formal subordination to rival blocs; it did not necessarily mean isolation or equal distance from each power on every issue. A state could seek aid from multiple sources while defending a particular foreign-policy position. To assess autonomy, investigate conditions attached to assistance, domestic priorities and the possibility of refusing an offer. Keep governments’ choices distinct from all citizens’ preferences.

Work through the evidence

Fictional new state: 80 of 100 export units come from one commodity and 70 go to one buyer. Independence changes who appoints ministers; it does not automatically diversify exports. An aid offer funding a road may help market access but carry conditions. Make a decision brief that separates immediate benefit, future dependence and evidence not yet available.

Sources and their limits

Self-determination declaration: short excerpt

All peoples have the right to self-determination

Exact short clause from paragraph 2 of resolution 1514 (XV), reproduced by the UN Library. The complete paragraph and resolution add scope and context.

Consult the source collection or original. Short attributed excerpt; full text and modern edition retain their own rights.

Bandung official publication record

The ministry’s catalog identifies official speeches and the conference’s final communiqué concerning cooperation, coexistence and anticolonial aims.

Authored catalog summary, not a quotation or a complete account of disagreements.

Export dependence case

100 export units: 80 from one commodity; 70 sold to one buyer. Commodity and buyer categories overlap.

Fictional values; the two counts must not be added as if they were disjoint groups.

Extend and revise

High school: Separate legal sovereignty from two economic indicators.

AP practice: Compare decolonization paths and newly independent states’ agency using contextualized sources.

Introductory college: Select two cases and justify comparable outcomes while addressing borders, archives and internal diversity.

How would a citizen, exporter and minister define successful independence differently?

Worked example

Fictional new state: 80 of 100 export units come from one commodity and 70 go to one buyer. Independence changes who appoints ministers; it does not automatically diversify exports. An aid offer funding a road may help market access but carry conditions. Make a decision brief that separates immediate benefit, future dependence and evidence not yet available.
