European history · Source investigation 2

Map the limits of a religious peace

Whose freedom does a settlement protect?

Your task: Build a four-row legal-actor matrix for a Catholic estate, an Augsburg-Confession estate, another confession and an individual resident. Mark supported, excluded or not established. Write an unfamiliar museum label explaining why a peace agreement can reduce conflict without establishing universal religious equality.

Map the limits of a religious peace

Whose freedom does a settlement protect?

Read the dated source packet

Record 1: Religious Peace of Augsburg, sections 15–17

The clauses protect estates adhering to the Augsburg Confession and those retaining Catholic faith; section 17 excludes other confessions from the settlement.

Imperial settlement; German Historical Institute translation. September 25, 1555. Read the source edition. This is an editorial paraphrase of primary evidence, not a quotation.

Record 2: Ecclesiastical reservation, section 18

The settlement addresses the offices and possessions of a spiritual estate whose holder changes religion. Office, property and personal belief are therefore not interchangeable categories.

Same settlement, distinct clause. September 25, 1555. Read the source edition. This is an editorial paraphrase of primary evidence, not a quotation.

Mechanisms and context

An estate here is a political member of the Holy Roman Empire, not simply a household or social class. Identify the legal actor before translating a protection into a modern individual right. A rule that protects a ruler or corporate territory against another authority need not grant every resident unrestricted choice.

Treat negotiated coexistence and universal toleration as different possible arrangements. A settlement can restrain certain conflicts while leaving exclusions and disputed authority. Religion also affects offices, revenues and property: ask who controls an institution after a change in allegiance. Legal language can structure incentives without guaranteeing peaceful implementation.

Build a matrix with protected parties, excluded parties, regulated action and enforcement question. Keep the imperial scale separate from a town or household. Compare this case with a later argument about individual conscience only after identifying the different genres: a political settlement and a philosophical argument do not perform the same function.

Fill the table before writing. Draw arrows only where you can explain the connection: a later document is not automatically caused by an earlier one. The display is your evidence model, not an authentic historical document.

Worked reasoning

Sections 15–17 support a bounded claim about two protected confessional groupings, not the claim that every religion received identical standing. The existence of an exclusion is direct evidence against that universal wording; it does not by itself count the number of excluded residents.

Your investigation

Build a four-row legal-actor matrix for a Catholic estate, an Augsburg-Confession estate, another confession and an individual resident. Mark supported, excluded or not established. Write an unfamiliar museum label explaining why a peace agreement can reduce conflict without establishing universal religious equality.

Check and transfer

Does section 17 support universal inclusion of all confessions? Explain before checking. Feedback: The scope clause limits the beneficiaries.

A treaty protects cities against seizure but says nothing about household voting. Does it establish household suffrage? Feedback: Collective political protection is not evidence of a different individual right.

Extend independently

Consult the linked full primary text and identify its edition or translation. Add an independently chosen contrasting source and defend an interpretation against a plausible rival. Keep event date, original publication date and modern edition date separate. Submit a claim, a counterinterpretation and a revision note; completion of a source table alone does not establish argument quality.

Imperial estate: A political member of the Holy Roman Empire with a recognized place in its constitutional order.

Use this case in world history

Put the three dates on one timeline: Luther’s theses in 1517, the Augsburg settlement in 1555, and the Trent decree in 1563. The paired reform reading spans an intervening settlement; lesson order is not event order. Compare the question each source can answer before combining them into an argument.

For a world-history comparison, use three columns: claimed authority, specified beneficiaries or subjects, and evidence of implementation. A doctrinal argument, a political settlement and a recruitment record have different functions. Do not force every case into an identical story of religious freedom or central control.

Write one comparison with a second case you have actually studied. Identify a shared analytical question, a difference in the institutions, and an uncertainty created by the sources. If the second case is Ottoman recruitment, compare the relationship between authority and the people subject to it; do not assume that service recruitment and a religious settlement regulate the same action.

Keep the comparison within the supplied evidence. These European sources do not establish the history of Ottoman–Safavid relations or Sikh development. Those require their own dated evidence and explanations. The same saved notes and first attempts remain attached to this lesson when you reach it from a different course.
