Media and civic inquiry

Trace a claim to its origin

Provenance identifies where information came from and how it changed.

Your task: Draw the citation chain and rewrite the claim with the dashboard's unit and time period. Identify one missing comparison.

Starting recap and vocabulary

Read a record as a claim with a creator, purpose and scope. A count, interpretation and value judgment are different kinds of evidence. Percent means per hundred; percentage points compare two percentages.

provenance
The origin and subsequent transmission of a record or claim
teaching record
An authored fictional example designed to make reasoning inspectable; not evidence that an event occurred.
01 · TRY

How many independent underlying datasets are supplied?

Draw the citation chain and rewrite the claim with the dashboard's unit and time period. Identify one missing comparison.

Use this as optional interdisciplinary evidence practice; there is no standalone AP Media and civic inquiry course. Compare two explanations using the supplied records and state a limitation.

04 · UNDERSTAND

Connect evidence and mechanism

Trace a claim to its origin

Provenance identifies where information came from and how it changed. Several outlets repeating one account do not provide several independent observations. Distinguish the original record, interpretation and later retelling.

Inspect the case

Teaching article Alpha claims library visits doubled, citing a town dashboard. Beta repeats Alpha; Gamma repeats Beta.

Teaching dashboard records 200 door entries this month versus 100 during a shortened opening period last month. Entries are not unique visitors.

Both records are original fictional teaching materials. They are not historical primary sources and do not report real participants.

Work through the mechanism

There is one underlying count, not three independent confirmations. Changed opening time and repeat entries complicate the headline.

Your investigation

Draw the citation chain and rewrite the claim with the dashboard’s unit and time period. Identify one missing comparison.

Make a two-column evidence table: what the record directly supports, and what you infer. Use record IDs when connecting observations to claims. Preserve your first interpretation before revising it.

Practice and transfer

How many independent underlying datasets are supplied?

Try the practice check in the activity, explain your choice, then apply the idea to this unfamiliar case: A fourth outlet interviews a librarian about opening hours. What does it add?

Limits and responsible interpretation

Fictional outlets teach provenance without endorsing real sources. A primary record can still be incomplete or mistaken.

A successful answer identifies a mechanism and its boundaries. A saved response records practice; it does not automatically establish independent understanding.

High school: Use the supplied records to complete this task: Draw the citation chain and rewrite the claim with the dashboard’s unit and time period. Identify one missing comparison. Explain your reasoning in a short paragraph or an annotated diagram with a text equivalent.

AP connection: Use this as optional interdisciplinary evidence practice; there is no standalone AP Media and civic inquiry course. Compare two explanations using the supplied records and state a limitation.

Introductory college: Frame a researchable version of the case, document definitions and source selection, and compare the supplied mechanism with a rival explanation. Use the linked disciplinary reading to find one relevant scholarly or institutional source; distinguish that real source from these fictional records. Submit a revision log and methods note.
