Anthropology and cultural inquiry

Map relationships without assuming one family form

Kinship systems organize relatedness, care and obligations in varied ways.

Your task: Draw separate residence, care and exchange links. Explain why one household table cannot capture every relationship.

Starting recap and vocabulary

Read a record as a claim with a creator, purpose and scope. A count, interpretation and value judgment are different kinds of evidence. Percent means per hundred; percentage points compare two percentages.

context
The relationships and circumstances that shape an observation's meaning
teaching record
An authored fictional example designed to make reasoning inspectable; not evidence that an event occurred.

Connect evidence and mechanism

Map relationships without assuming one family form

Kinship systems organize relatedness, care and obligations in varied ways. Household membership, biological relationship and recognized social ties are not interchangeable. Exchange can involve reciprocity, redistribution and markets in overlapping forms.

Inspect the case

Teaching household record lists two adults and three children sharing a dwelling. A nonresident relative provides daily care.

Teaching festival record pools food in a central store and distributes meals according to need; some ingredients were purchased at a market.

Both records are original fictional teaching materials. They are not historical primary sources and do not report real participants.

Work through the mechanism

A dwelling roster misses the nonresident caregiver. The festival combines market purchase and redistribution rather than fitting one exclusive economic label.

Your investigation

Draw separate residence, care and exchange links. Explain why one household table cannot capture every relationship.

Make a two-column evidence table: what the record directly supports, and what you infer. Use record IDs when connecting observations to claims. Preserve your first interpretation before revising it.

A gift today, an obligation beyond today

Does one observed outward transfer prove that nothing will come back? Compare an author's institutional account with a separate fictional transaction record. Predict what a longer observation window could change before opening the added record.

Read the historical account in context

Bronisław Malinowski, Argonauts of the Western Pacific (1922), chapters III and VI. These are original paraphrases of selected passages, checked 29 October 2026, not transcribed participant testimony. Project Gutenberg identifies the book as public domain in the USA; no photographs or modern edition material are reproduced.

This colonial-era ethnography presents the author's interpretation of particular communities and relationships. Its categorical language and generalizations require criticism. Three passages from one book remain one published account, not three independent confirmations. They neither establish contemporary practice nor speak for all community members.

PARTNERS: Chapter III, IV, pp. 91–94

Malinowski describes enduring partners with obligations beyond a single transfer. His account gives shell valuables opposite routes; a transaction does not exhaust the relationship.

NEGOTIATION: Chapter III, V, pp. 98–99

The account excludes bargaining from Kula while describing solicitary gifts and competition for valued objects. Absence of haggling therefore does not establish indifference to the objects.

COMPARISON: Chapter VI, VI, pp. 187–189

The author groups Kula with deferred ceremonial returns, then separately describes bargaining trade. These are distinctions within his account, not evidence that an entire society uses only one exchange form.

Read the surrounding sections in the linked text. Explain how COMPARISON qualifies the claim “without money, all transfers follow the same rules.” Identify whose account is available and whose interpretations would still be needed. Do not seek private family histories or collect ceremonial objects.

Separate fictional transfer: inspect the observation window

A and B are invented people. The ledger stipulates only the facts shown. It is not a reconstructed Kula transaction, and shell-like objects alone would not identify an institution.

Exact stipulated events, not a complete lifetime history
DayFrom → toObjectRecorded basis
1A → Bornament XStanding partnership; B accepts an obligation to make a later return.

Obligation documented; fulfillment unknown. Equal monetary value and termination of the relationship remain unknown in every case.

ABA → B: recordedB → A: not yet documented
Relationship schematic only; distances, object values and frequency are not encoded.
Compare your reasoning with feedback

Day 1 records an obligation, not its fulfillment or permanent failure. Day 40 supplies a specifically linked return, not proof of equal price or the end of a relationship. The changed case establishes negotiation because the record says so, not because two objects move. Malinowski's comparison illustrates why a single universal label can hide distinct rules; his account alone cannot verify this fictional case or modern practice.

Practice and transfer

Which relationship is absent from a dwelling-only roster?

Try the practice check in the activity, explain your choice, then apply the idea to this unfamiliar case: A new record identifies chosen kin with no biological tie. How should they be represented?

Limits and responsible interpretation

Do not ask learners to disclose family histories. Fictional networks support comparison without ranking household forms.

A successful answer identifies a mechanism and its boundaries. A saved response records practice; it does not automatically establish independent understanding.
