Psychology and human behavior

Mental health claims require careful interpretation

Mental and physical wellbeing involve interacting biological, psychological and social factors.

Your task: Rewrite the headline to state the population, missingness and measurement change. Propose an ethical evaluation using supplied anonymous data.

Starting recap and vocabulary

Read a record as a claim with a creator, purpose and scope. A count, interpretation and value judgment are different kinds of evidence. Percent means per hundred; percentage points compare two percentages.

confounder
A difference that offers an alternative explanation for an observed relationship
teaching record
An authored fictional example designed to make reasoning inspectable; not evidence that an event occurred.

Connect evidence and mechanism

Mental health claims require careful interpretation

Mental and physical wellbeing involve interacting biological, psychological and social factors. A screening measure is not a diagnosis, and group evidence does not determine an individual’s treatment. Evaluate comparison groups, attrition and outcome definitions before accepting an intervention claim.

Inspect the case

Teaching wellbeing program reports that 18 of 20 completers improve on a self-report scale. Thirty people initially enrolled.

Teaching follow-up: outcomes for ten dropouts are missing, and there is no comparison group. The scale changed between intake and completion.

Both records are original fictional teaching materials. They are not historical primary sources and do not report real participants.

Work through the mechanism

Ninety percent describes completers only. Across all enrollees, 18 of 30 are known to have improved, but the changed scale also undermines comparability.

Your investigation

Rewrite the headline to state the population, missingness and measurement change. Propose an ethical evaluation using supplied anonymous data.

Make a two-column evidence table: what the record directly supports, and what you infer. Use record IDs when connecting observations to claims. Preserve your first interpretation before revising it.

Practice and transfer

Can the report establish a 90-percent success rate for all enrollees?

Try the practice check in the activity, explain your choice, then apply the idea to this unfamiliar case: A stable-scale randomized comparison improves average scores. Can it prescribe treatment to one reader?

Limits and responsible interpretation

This lesson provides evidence literacy, not screening, diagnosis or treatment advice. Never collect personal health histories for the activity.

A successful answer identifies a mechanism and its boundaries. A saved response records practice; it does not automatically establish independent understanding.

High school: Use the supplied records to complete this task: Rewrite the headline to state the population, missingness and measurement change. Propose an ethical evaluation using supplied anonymous data. Explain your reasoning in a short paragraph or an annotated diagram with a text equivalent.

AP connection: Build an original stimulus-based response: identify the relevant Psychology concept, cite a specific detail in each record and explain a limitation. Then answer the transfer question without reopening the worked example. This is practice, not an official AP question.

Introductory college: Frame a researchable version of the case, document definitions and source selection, and compare the supplied mechanism with a rival explanation. Use the linked disciplinary reading to find one relevant scholarly or institutional source; distinguish that real source from these fictional records. Submit a revision log and methods note.
