Psychology and human behavior

Connect biological mechanisms with evidence

Neurons communicate through electrical activity and chemical signaling; nervous and endocrine systems coordinate behavior on different timescales.

Your task: Sketch stimulus, sensory processing, response and measured time. Identify the confounded condition and propose a safer supplied-data comparison.

Starting recap and vocabulary

Read a record as a claim with a creator, purpose and scope. A count, interpretation and value judgment are different kinds of evidence. Percent means per hundred; percentage points compare two percentages.

confounder
A difference that offers an alternative explanation for an observed relationship
teaching record
An authored fictional example designed to make reasoning inspectable; not evidence that an event occurred.

Connect evidence and mechanism

Connect biological mechanisms with evidence

Neurons communicate through electrical activity and chemical signaling; nervous and endocrine systems coordinate behavior on different timescales. Brain activity can be associated with a task without identifying a single sufficient cause. Biological explanations interact with experience and context.

Inspect the case

Teaching experiment: the same participants complete a reaction task after a normal night and after a shorter night. Average response times are 300 and 360 milliseconds.

Teaching procedure: all participants complete the normal-night session first and the short-night session second. No order counterbalancing is used.

Both records are original fictional teaching materials. They are not historical primary sources and do not report real participants.

Work through the mechanism

The average difference is 60 milliseconds, or 20 percent of 300. Sleep is a plausible mechanism, but session order is also changed.

Your investigation

Sketch stimulus, sensory processing, response and measured time. Identify the confounded condition and propose a safer supplied-data comparison.

Make a two-column evidence table: what the record directly supports, and what you infer. Use record IDs when connecting observations to claims. Preserve your first interpretation before revising it.

Practice and transfer

Does the 60 ms difference alone isolate a sleep mechanism?

Try the practice check in the activity, explain your choice, then apply the idea to this unfamiliar case: A brain scan region is active during two different tasks. What should you avoid?

Limits and responsible interpretation

Teaching timings are invented. Do not change sleep, medication or health behavior to run this activity; it is not clinical advice.

A successful answer identifies a mechanism and its boundaries. A saved response records practice; it does not automatically establish independent understanding.

High school: Use the supplied records to complete this task: Sketch stimulus, sensory processing, response and measured time. Identify the confounded condition and propose a safer supplied-data comparison. Explain your reasoning in a short paragraph or an annotated diagram with a text equivalent.

AP connection: Build an original stimulus-based response: identify the relevant Psychology concept, cite a specific detail in each record and explain a limitation. Then answer the transfer question without reopening the worked example. This is practice, not an official AP question.

Introductory college: Frame a researchable version of the case, document definitions and source selection, and compare the supplied mechanism with a rival explanation. Use the linked disciplinary reading to find one relevant scholarly or institutional source; distinguish that real source from these fictional records. Submit a revision log and methods note.
