Psychology and human behavior

Learning changes with experience and context

Classical conditioning concerns learned associations between events; operant conditioning concerns how consequences alter behavior.

Your task: Classify each mechanism and redesign the age comparison to record prior experience. Describe a longitudinal alternative and its attrition risk.

Starting recap and vocabulary

Read a record as a claim with a creator, purpose and scope. A count, interpretation and value judgment are different kinds of evidence. Percent means per hundred; percentage points compare two percentages.

confounder
A difference that offers an alternative explanation for an observed relationship
teaching record
An authored fictional example designed to make reasoning inspectable; not evidence that an event occurred.

Which example most clearly involves a consequence after behavior?

Classify each mechanism and redesign the age comparison to record prior experience. Describe a longitudinal alternative and its attrition risk.

Use the supplied records to complete this task: Classify each mechanism and redesign the age comparison to record prior experience. Describe a longitudinal alternative and its attrition risk. Explain your reasoning in a short paragraph or an annotated diagram with a text equivalent.

Connect evidence and mechanism

Learning changes with experience and context

Classical conditioning concerns learned associations between events; operant conditioning concerns how consequences alter behavior. Development includes changing capacities and social environments across life. Cross-sectional age differences can reflect cohort conditions as well as age.

Inspect the case

Teaching classroom record: a sound repeatedly precedes a quiz; students later report tension at the sound. A separate system awards feedback points after completed practice.

Teaching age comparison: older learners score higher, but they also have more prior coursework and use different devices.

Both records are original fictional teaching materials. They are not historical primary sources and do not report real participants.

Work through the mechanism

The cue association and consequence-based practice are distinct mechanisms. The age gap does not isolate maturation because experience differs.

Your investigation

Classify each mechanism and redesign the age comparison to record prior experience. Describe a longitudinal alternative and its attrition risk.

Make a two-column evidence table: what the record directly supports, and what you infer. Use record IDs when connecting observations to claims. Preserve your first interpretation before revising it.

Practice and transfer

Which example most clearly involves a consequence after behavior?

Try the practice check in the activity, explain your choice, then apply the idea to this unfamiliar case: A longitudinal study loses many struggling participants. What may happen?

Limits and responsible interpretation

Development is varied, not a rigid schedule that labels every learner. Avoid using conditioning exercises to manipulate classmates.

A successful answer identifies a mechanism and its boundaries. A saved response records practice; it does not automatically establish independent understanding.

High school: Use the supplied records to complete this task: Classify each mechanism and redesign the age comparison to record prior experience. Describe a longitudinal alternative and its attrition risk. Explain your reasoning in a short paragraph or an annotated diagram with a text equivalent.

AP connection: Build an original stimulus-based response: identify the relevant Psychology concept, cite a specific detail in each record and explain a limitation. Then answer the transfer question without reopening the worked example. This is practice, not an official AP question.

Introductory college: Frame a researchable version of the case, document definitions and source selection, and compare the supplied mechanism with a rival explanation. Use the linked disciplinary reading to find one relevant scholarly or institutional source; distinguish that real source from these fictional records. Submit a revision log and methods note.
