Anthropology and cultural inquiry · Inquiry extension 5

Colonial research archives: authority to describe and share

An archive's catalog reflects choices made by collectors and institutions. Contemporary community knowledge can correct interpretation and identify responsibilities absent from an old catalog. Online access does not mean every reuse is culturally appropriate or authorized.

Your task: Create a versioned catalog record with original description, later interpretation, contributor attribution and access conditions. Use the real LOC collaboration as a model of shared description; identify who should be consulted before a hypothetical classroom remix.

Starting recap and vocabulary

Distinguish the record, the interpretation and the conditions under which the interpretation holds. Identify who produced the record and who is absent.

Context
The relationships, circumstances and purpose needed to interpret a record.
Validity
Evidence supporting a particular interpretation and use, within stated conditions.
01 · TRY

Why retain the earlier catalog description?

Create a versioned catalog record with original description, later interpretation, contributor attribution and access conditions. Use the real LOC collaboration as a model of shared description; identify who should be consulted before a hypothetical classroom remix.

Complete the specified diagram, record or table and explain one assumption in plain language. All supplied evidence can be examined without collecting personal information.

Colonial research archives: authority to describe and share

Predict with context

An archive’s catalog reflects choices made by collectors and institutions. Contemporary community knowledge can correct interpretation and identify responsibilities absent from an old catalog. Online access does not mean every reuse is culturally appropriate or authorized.

Predict how the conclusion changes when the missing context or competing account is added. State your reason before reading feedback.

Inspect the authentic source

The LOC statement describes collaboration with Passamaquoddy community members and the application of Traditional Knowledge Labels to historical recordings made by Jesse Walter Fewkes in 1890 and 1891. It states that the Tribe and the donor museum consented to the online presentation.

Library of Congress, American Folklife Center — source note. Ancestral Voices rights and access statement, consulted October 2026. Authored paraphrase of an authentic official or educational source. This note is not a verbatim primary excerpt. Its description, purpose and limits must stay attached.

Worked investigation

Synthetic catalog revision: an old card says ‘unknown chant’; a community collaborator identifies a named speaker and a seasonal context. Preserve the original card as historical evidence, add the new attribution and date, and document conditions on reuse. Replacing the old card silently would hide how knowledge and authority changed.

Produce an inspectable result

Create a versioned catalog record with original description, later interpretation, contributor attribution and access conditions. Use the real LOC collaboration as a model of shared description; identify who should be consulted before a hypothetical classroom remix.

Keep the original record available alongside your analysis. Label invented details, attributed descriptions and your own interpretations separately. For numeric work, show the intermediate arithmetic and units; for interpretive work, point to the specific feature supporting a claim. A reader should be able to identify where another interpretation could enter.

Transfer

A public recording is technically downloadable. What further question is necessary before remixing it?

Write the answer and its reason before opening feedback. Identify one similarity that makes transfer useful and one difference that limits it. State a specific next observation rather than saying only that more information is needed.

Limits and responsibility

Do not download or perform culturally restricted material for this exercise. The supplied evidence concerns the official access statement; it does not claim to translate or interpret the recordings themselves.

A source can be authoritative about its own procedure or announcement without establishing every outcome that someone might infer from it. Ask whether the record describes an action, expresses a principle, documents an observation or interprets another source. Those are different evidential roles.

Extend

High school: Complete the specified diagram, record or table and explain one assumption in plain language. All supplied evidence can be examined without collecting personal information.

College: Add a bounded authentic case or methodological record that tests the weakest assumption. Document version, access, selection and interpretation, and present a justified alternative conclusion.

Worked example

Synthetic catalog revision: an old card says 'unknown chant'; a community collaborator identifies a named speaker and a seasonal context. Preserve the original card as historical evidence, add the new attribution and date, and document conditions on reuse. Replacing the old card silently would hide how knowledge and authority changed.
