Compare trait patterns with situation effects

Use repeated observations to distinguish stable differences from context-dependent behavior.

Your task: Compare within-person and between-person variation without assigning a personality diagnosis.

Starting recap and vocabulary

A within-person comparison follows one person across conditions; a between-person comparison compares people under a common condition.

Trait
A dimension describing relatively characteristic patterns.
Within-person comparison
Comparison across conditions for the same person.
Triangulation
Comparing different relevant evidence sources to investigate a claim.
01 · TRY

Can stable differences between people coexist with strong situation effects?

Make a two-line plot on the same zero-to-ten scale. Compare each person's change with the between-person gap in each setting. Write a conclusion that allows both trait-like consistency and situational variation, then state the next observations needed.

Complete the labeled table or trace with the supplied records. Explain each step in words before using the technical term.

Mechanism and evidence

Trait approaches describe dimensions of characteristic behavior rather than placing every person in a fixed type. The Big Five framework summarizes openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism as broad dimensions. A trait description is not itself a complete explanation of the mechanism producing a particular act. Situations and measurement procedures matter. The linked reading introduces trait approaches; this exercise uses no actual personality test.

A speaks more than B in both observed settings: the gaps are 3 and 2 turns. Both speak less in the formal meeting: A falls by 5 and B by 4. Stable relative ordering therefore coexists with a substantial setting difference. The invented counts demonstrate that these claims are logically compatible; they do not estimate a real population relationship.

Draw both people using a common vertical scale from zero to ten. Give the contexts equally spaced labeled positions; the connecting lines organize comparison, not continuous time between sessions. A graph with a different vertical range for each person could exaggerate or hide the changes. Add the table below as a text equivalent.

Counts of speaking turns are not automatically a measure of extraversion. Longer turns, unequal invitations, expertise, language access and role assignments could change counts. A self-report may add useful information but can reflect wording, interpretation and self-presentation. Triangulation means comparing relevant kinds of evidence, not assuming agreement makes every instrument valid.

A stronger follow-up repeats observations across days and relevant settings, records opportunities, and defines the intended inference before collecting data. Do not survey classmates or label real people. The independent task is to explain the supplied pattern and design a more informative measurement plan. Keep uncertainty about traits distinct from the clear arithmetic in the observed table.

Graph task: Plot both rows with the same zero-to-ten vertical scale. Explain why connecting lines do not show continuous time.

Worked example

A changes from 8 to 3 (−5); B from 5 to 1 (−4). A remains higher in both settings, but the setting shifts both observed counts. Neither finding cancels the other.

Independent application

A new observer finds A=2 and B=6 in a specialist task where B is the only expert. What should the interpretation include? Explain the denominator, process or rule before checking the response. Record a revision after feedback.
