Trace a signal across two neurons
Separate electrical signaling within a neuron from chemical signaling across a synapse.
Your task: Build a labeled signal trace and predict what changes when a receptor is blocked.

Starting recap and vocabulary
A cell membrane separates the inside and outside of a cell. Voltage is an electrical difference; millivolts (mV) are one thousandth of a volt.
- Action potential
- A brief electrical change propagated along an axon once triggered.
- Synapse
- A junction through which one cell influences another.
- Threshold
- The trigger level used in this model.
Does doubling a stimulus necessarily double the height of each action potential?
Draw five labeled boxes: incoming input, threshold decision, axon spike, transmitter release, postsynaptic response. Place each observation in a box. Cross out only the step directly affected by the receptor block, then explain what still happens.
Complete the labeled table or trace with the supplied records. Explain each step in words before using the technical term.

Worked example
For A, −60 < −55, so the simplified trigger does not fire. For B, −50 ≥ −55, so it fires. Blocking the receiving receptor changes the next cell's response, not the already observed sending spike.
