Starting recap and vocabulary
A speaker is the voice constructed within a poem; the author is its creator. Metaphor connects unlike things to develop meaning. An interpretation needs textual evidence, but a literary work is not a representative population survey.
- Speaker
- The voice constructed within a poem, which should not automatically be identified with every view or experience of its author.
- Refrain
- A repeated phrase or line whose effect can change with its surrounding language.
- Metaphor
- A comparison that develops meaning by describing one thing through another.
- Double-consciousness
- Du Bois’s account here of self-perception shaped by the judgment of a racialized social world; it is not a diagnosis.
- Reception
- How particular readers or audiences encountered and interpreted a work; publication alone does not establish their response.
How do outward appearance and inward experience interact in two different forms of writing?
Read the complete poem once before annotating. Trace outward appearance and inward experience in each stanza, using line numbers. Compare one contrast with Du Bois’s passage. Draft two plausible readings of the refrain, select the better-supported claim and revise it after examining the final stanza.
Use the numbered lines to explain one contrast, then distinguish the poem’s speaker from its author. No personal disclosure or performance is required.

Connect evidence and mechanism
Worked example
“The speaker smiles, therefore the poem celebrates contentment” isolates one verb. Lines 4 and 10–11 place smiling beside pain and cries, so outward expression does not transparently reveal inward experience. A stronger reading explains that tension and considers whether the refrain suggests imposed concealment, strategic withholding, or both. The text supports an argument; it does not establish how every reader understood the poem.
