Media and civic inquiry · Evidence investigation 5

Titanic reporting: compare what could be known when

Publication time and evidence access shape what a report can establish. Later information can correct an early claim, but lateness alone does not guarantee reliability. Trace dependence: several outlets repeating one dispatch are not several independent witnesses.

Your task: Build a timeline using the authenticated dates, then open two newspaper items from the linked guide. Record issue date, edition, specific claim, credited source and uncertainty. Do not transcribe a headline you cannot inspect. Write an explicit unknown when source access or legibility fails.

Starting recap and vocabulary

Separate observation, operational definition, interpretation and causal claim. Check the source's population, purpose and date before transferring a conclusion.

Mechanism
A specified process linking conditions, actions and outcomes; a pattern alone does not establish it.
Scope
The people, place, period and kind of claim to which evidence applies.

Why is a two-outlet majority weak in the worked reconstruction?

Build a timeline using the authenticated dates, then open two newspaper items from the linked guide. Record issue date, edition, specific claim, credited source and uncertainty. Do not transcribe a headline you cannot inspect. Write an explicit unknown when source access or legibility fails.

Produce the specified table, timeline or diagram; cite the source record and mark assumptions. Explain one tempting but unsupported conclusion.

Predict

Before calculating or reading feedback, predict what the evidence can establish and name one competing explanation.

Publication time and evidence access shape what a report can establish. Later information can correct an early claim, but lateness alone does not guarantee reliability. Trace dependence: several outlets repeating one dispatch are not several independent witnesses.

Inspect the authentic source

The guide’s chronology identifies conflicting newspaper reports after the collision, confirmation of sinking in reports by 16 April, a Senate inquiry beginning 19 April, and a committee report on 28 May. It links the digitized historical newspaper collection.

Source: Library of Congress research guide. Date: Historical events April–May 1912; LOC guide updated 12 June 2025. This source note is an authored paraphrase.

Worked analysis

Teaching reconstruction, not historical headlines: at time 1, outlets A and B both repeat dispatch X saying rescue is complete; at time 2, outlet C interviews a survivor who disputes that claim. Counting sources gives 2–1, but the evidence consists of one repeated dispatch and one new account. Reassess source access and claim scope rather than voting among headlines.

Build and challenge your account

Build a timeline using the authenticated dates, then open two newspaper items from the linked guide. Record issue date, edition, specific claim, credited source and uncertainty. Do not transcribe a headline you cannot inspect. Write an explicit unknown when source access or legibility fails.

Use a separate line for each conclusion. Beside it, identify the source record, transformation or interpretive step, and assumption that could fail. Keep observations separate from explanations. If two interpretations fit the same record, identify an additional observation that would distinguish them rather than choosing the more familiar story.

Independent transfer

Three current posts show the same cropped screenshot while one links the full report. What should you do first?

Write an answer before opening feedback. State what changes in the new setting and which part of the original reasoning still applies. A good transfer answer includes both a useful inference and a boundary on that inference.

Limits

The embedded authentic evidence is the LOC chronology, not a complete newspaper corpus. Article-level findings require inspection of the linked items. Early missing-person reports must not be silently relabeled as final death totals.

Review your evidence

Check the units and denominator of every number; check the author, date and access of every account. Distinguish an absent observation from evidence that an event did not occur. Retain a short revision note so a reviewer can follow how your conclusion changed.

Extend

High school: Produce the specified table, timeline or diagram; cite the source record and mark assumptions. Explain one tempting but unsupported conclusion.

AP-connected practice: Use this as interdisciplinary evidence practice where relevant to an existing AP course. Write a claim with specific evidence and a counter-explanation. This family is not represented as a separate AP course.

College: Extend the mechanism with a second authentic record selected for its ability to challenge your interpretation. Document sampling, measurement or source-access limits and a reproducible analysis trail.
