Media and civic inquiry

Conflicting reports may measure different things

Corroboration compares evidence with attention to timing, definitions, access and independence.

Your task: Create a definition-and-time table for both reports. State what remains uncertain even after arithmetic reconciles them.

Starting recap and vocabulary

Read a record as a claim with a creator, purpose and scope. A count, interpretation and value judgment are different kinds of evidence. Percent means per hundred; percentage points compare two percentages.

provenance
The origin and subsequent transmission of a record or claim
teaching record
An authored fictional example designed to make reasoning inspectable; not evidence that an event occurred.

Connect evidence and mechanism

Conflicting reports may measure different things

Corroboration compares evidence with attention to timing, definitions, access and independence. A contradiction may reflect genuine disagreement or different scopes. Do not average incompatible figures merely to appear balanced.

Inspect the case

Teaching report A counts 120 event tickets sold. Report B counts 90 people entering the venue.

Teaching organizer notes ten complimentary admissions and forty ticket holders who did not attend. Gate records include complimentary admissions.

Both records are original fictional teaching materials. They are not historical primary sources and do not report real participants.

Work through the mechanism

120 minus 40 plus 10 equals 90. The figures reconcile because they measure sales and attendance, not the same quantity.

Your investigation

Create a definition-and-time table for both reports. State what remains uncertain even after arithmetic reconciles them.

Make a two-column evidence table: what the record directly supports, and what you infer. Use record IDs when connecting observations to claims. Preserve your first interpretation before revising it.

Practice and transfer

Are the two headline numbers necessarily contradictory?

Try the practice check in the activity, explain your choice, then apply the idea to this unfamiliar case: A later report counts 95 entries but includes re-entry. What should be checked?

Limits and responsible interpretation

Reconciliation does not authenticate the supplied records. Real reporting needs source access and corroboration.

A successful answer identifies a mechanism and its boundaries. A saved response records practice; it does not automatically establish independent understanding.

AP connection: Use this as optional interdisciplinary evidence practice; there is no standalone AP Media and civic inquiry course. Compare two explanations using the supplied records and state a limitation.

Introductory college: Frame a researchable version of the case, document definitions and source selection, and compare the supplied mechanism with a rival explanation. Use the linked disciplinary reading to find one relevant scholarly or institutional source; distinguish that real source from these fictional records. Submit a revision log and methods note.
