Classify international flows before assigning signs

Is a foreign purchase of a bond an export of a good?

Your task: Build an account-classification table for every transaction. Reconcile the current and financial accounts, then translate to the net-inflow convention in a separate labeled column.

Starting recap and vocabulary

Read counts with their units. A percentage divides a part by its named whole and multiplies by 100. A model assumption is not an observed fact.

Financial account
International-account entries recording acquisition of financial assets and incurrence of liabilities across borders.
Assumption
A condition accepted for a model or argument; it needs justification before applying the result elsewhere.

Question and evidence

Is a foreign purchase of a bond an export of a good?

A fictional economy exports goods 40, imports goods 55, receives net primary income 3 and net current transfers 2. Its current-account balance is therefore−10. Residents acquire foreign financial assets 8, while domestic liabilities to foreigners increase 18.

The numerical case is a teaching model, not a measured real-world effect.

Mechanism

The current account includes goods, services, primary income and secondary income, not only merchandise trade. The financial account records cross-border assets and liabilities. A sign convention must be stated before comparing balances. In an idealized account with zero capital-account balance and no errors, current-account balance equals the financial-account balance under the stated asset-minus-liability convention.

Worked calculation

Current account=40−55+3+2=−10. Financial account=8−18=−10. Net inward financing is 18−8=+10. These statements reconcile; they use different definitions of the sign, not contradictory facts.

Challenge and revision

A dashboard labels every foreign payment an export and reports only the trade balance−15. Under a financial-account convention of net asset acquisition minus net liability incurrence, the financial-account balance is 8−18=−10, not+10. Net inward financing uses the opposite sign.

Build an account-classification table for every transaction. Reconcile the current and financial accounts, then translate to the net-inflow convention in a separate labeled column.
