Mathematics · unit version 1

Determinants from permutations to certificates

Prove determinant identities over fields, derive cofactor certificates and test exact and numerical interpretations. Computation supports the proofs rather than replacing their hypotheses.

Open any lesson. Completion records participation; automatic practice checks and human judgment of written arguments are separate. This unit retains its own versioned requirements.

Readiness and preparation

Check your starting point

Try these short questions on paper, then compare your reasoning. They are optional self-checks, not a placement score or a navigation requirement. Use a targeted review when useful and return with your browser’s Back control.

How do you compute a 2×2 determinant and interpret a zero result?

Small calculations motivate the general alternating formula without substituting for its proof.

Compare reasoning and find a refresher

For rows (a,b) and (c,d), the determinant is ad−bc. Zero means the columns are dependent over the stated field; over the real numbers the parallelogram collapses.

Review determinants and signed area

What do the columns of AB represent?

The product proof applies A to each column of B and uses multilinearity in those columns.

Compare reasoning and find a refresher

Column j of AB is A applied to column j of B. It is a linear combination of columns of A with coefficients from that column of B.

Lesson sequence

Each linked lesson opens on its own page. Expand its details here when you want to check the objectives before choosing.

  1. Construct the determinant from permutations

    Lesson details and objectives

Build the signed permutation sum and prove its alternating multilinear characterization without assuming determinant identities.

    • Compute permutation terms with an explicit row-selection convention and justify multiplicativity of permutation signs independently of determinants.
    • Prove column multilinearity, alternation and normalization over any field, including characteristic two.
    • Prove uniqueness by basis expansion and handle the zero-dimensional convention.

    6 practice tasks.

  2. Prove determinant products and their limits

    Lesson details and objectives

Derive multiplicativity from an alternating multilinear form, then distinguish invertibility, block elimination and numerical conditioning.

    • Prove multiplicativity without assuming either factor is invertible or dividing by a determinant.
    • Derive triangular and block-triangular formulas from the surviving permutation terms and use a justified Schur complement.
    • Separate exact determinant tests from conditioning, addition and unsupported block formulas.

    6 practice tasks.

  3. Cofactors, adjugates and exact systems

    Lesson details and objectives

Derive cofactor expansion and the adjugate identities, then distinguish inverse formulas from the information retained at singular matrices.

    • Derive row and column expansions by grouping permutations and tracking the deleted-position sign.
    • Prove both adjugate identities and Cramer’s rule, with the transpose and nonzero-determinant hypotheses explicit.
    • Classify adjugates at the two possible singular rank regimes and use their kernel information without claiming a nonexistent inverse.

    6 practice tasks.
